BIKE SET-UP

Instead of individually buying the parts for my bike (as Quentin did), I bought the ready-for-action TX-800 touring bike from VSF Fahrradmanufaktur, which is quite a lot less expensive, although I did have to replace some parts on it for comfort.

MY BICYCLE BAGS

Ortlieb is the undisputed leader when it comes to bike bags. These bags are waterproof, tough, simple and have proven themselves for decades. This wasn’t a tough choice at all, and on our test trip to Amsterdam our bags took a beating without any problems.

MY TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT

Since most tech these days is light and doesn’t take up much space, the decisive factor with taking them on a tour like this is risk: Will you risk breaking or losing your expensive device for the benefits it will provide?

Following through with this thought, I tried limiting myself to only robust or indispensable technology.

MY CYCLING CLOTHING

For the bike wear, my individualism finally kicked in. After taking the easy route for my bike and the bags, I felt like distinguishing myself from the usual, biking clothes which are highly functional, very expensive and also  absolutely hideous to my eye, mostly because they’re terribly boring.

Because of all that it took me quite a while to pick out what I was gonna wear to stay warm, dry and safe during the trip.

Sturdy Shoes

While these are quite heavy and clunky, they’re basically indestructible – and waterproof.

Rain Jacket

DASSY Atlantis reflecting waterproof jacket

Bike Shorts

These are literally gonna save my ass.
Some waterproof pants I got in a bundle with a rain cape in a workers' clothing store. (This isn't the right picture though)

CAMPING

We will experience temperature differences of almost 40 degrees on our journey. This makes camping one of the most complicated. After all, it is a compromise of the lowest possible weight and pack size without sacrificing robustness and comfort. At least, this equipment is my home for the next 10 months.
